English for Beginners


Our General English classes and private lessons are designed to help you improve your ability to use and understand English. Our courses are taught by experienced and qualified English tutors who incorporate speaking, listening, reading and writing skills; and they will also help you to develop your grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary.

Each unit is based on our selection of highly successful course books, which covers a wide variety of topics including: holidays, food and drink, sport, culture, jobs, transport, and entertainment. Please note all materials supplied by the English Language Club is free of charge to all members and students.

Our English tutors use a communicative approach and methodology, meaning there is a strong focus on speaking and listening skills, which is designed to help you develop your fluency, pronunciation and increase your vocabulary for many everyday situations as well as improve your ability to listen and understand native English speakers.

With relatively small online class sizes, and one-2-one lessons, we are able to offer a personal service where our teachers can help you to progress quickly and focus on the areas you need to improve in. Our group and private students will study using the most effective materials and spend a lot of time in class actually using the language you are learning in a variety of interesting, innovative activities.

At the end of each unit you will be given a grammar and or use of English test to see if you are ready to move up to the next level.

What is A1 and A2?


Level A1 = beginner, which means that you can:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people they know and things they have.
  • Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.


Level A2 = elementary, which means that you can:

  • Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
  • Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • Describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

YL

What is YLE?

YLE is Cambridge English: Young Learners, also known as Young Learners English Tests (YLE), is a suite of English language examinations specially designed for children in primary and lower-secondary school.

The suite includes Pre A1 Starters, formerly known as Cambridge English: Starters (YLE Starters) is targeted at pre-A1 Level, A1 Movers, formerly known as Cambridge English: Movers (YLE Movers) at CEFR Level A1, and A2 Flyers, formerly known as Cambridge English: Flyers (YLE Flyers) at CEFR Level A2.

The tests are written around familiar topics and focus on the skills needed to communicate effectively in English through listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The suite includes three qualifications, each targeted at a different level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as follows:

Pre A1 Starters can help your child take their first step towards:

  • understanding basic English content on the internet
  • enjoying books, songs, television and films in English.

KET exam
What is KET?

A2 Key, formerly known as Cambridge English: Key (KET), is one of Cambridge English Qualifications. This basic-level qualification is a great exam to take if you're new to learning English. An A2 Key qualification is proof of your ability to use English to communicate in simple situations.


The exam tests all four English language skills:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening
  • Speaking
It should give you the confidence to go on and study for higher-level exams such as B1 Preliminary and B2 First.

A2 Key certificate shows that you can:

  • understand and use basic phrases and expressions
  • understand simple written English
  • introduce yourself and answer basic questions about yourself
  • interact with English speakers at a basic level.
